SAN ANTONIO—April 4, 2011— Kinetic Concepts, Inc. (NYSE:KCI), a global leader in healing and regeneration, today announced plans for and broke ground on a new global headquarters in San Antonio. The headquarters building will be located on San Antonio's northwest side and is expected to be ready to occupy in summer 2012.
The facility, consisting of more than 100,000 square feet of space, will include the company's corporate functions that support its business operations across the globe. KCI currently serves the medical community and patients in more than 20 countries and continues to expand into new markets around the world.
The groundbreaking takes place as KCI celebrates the 35th anniversary of its founding in San Antonio in 1976. Today, KCI employs approximately 2,000 people in San Antonio and currently owns or leases more than 700,000 square feet of existing space in buildings around the city. The San Antonio workforce includes scientists and medical professionals involved in innovative research and development programs, service representatives that support a diverse base of customers, manufacturing professionals, and administrative and corporate teams.
"KCI is so proud of its San Antonio roots and in this, our 35th year, we couldn't be more pleased to deepen our roots by breaking ground on this new facility," said KCI president and CEO Catherine Burzik. "We celebrate this great milestone on behalf of all of the people of KCI — nearly 7,000 dedicated professionals who serve customers and patients in countries around the globe. And we especially celebrate today along with our many friends, supporters and partners across San Antonio. This is a great city and we are honored to represent it as a global corporate citizen." To commemorate its 35th anniversary, KCI announced today a community service campaign in which the company's San Antonio employees will collectively contribute 35,000 hours of service to community projects during the year.
KCI is also working with design-builder Koontz McCombs Construction, Inc. to ensure the new headquarters supports environmental responsibility. It is expected that the facility will qualify for LEED certification. Established by the U.S. Green Building Council, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system recognizes benchmarks for the design, construction and operation of environmentally responsible buildings. Participants in the groundbreaking ceremony included San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro, Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, San Antonio City Councilmember Reed Williams, San Antonio City Manager Sheryl Sculley, San Antonio Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Richard Perez and Chamber Chairman Sam Dawson.
