1.  Assessment and Documentation of Pressure Ulcers      Objectives:
  • Discuss the layers of the skin
  • List the items to be assessed and documented when evaluating an existing pressure ulcer
  • Define the NPUAP staging system for pressure ulcers

2.  Etiology and Interventions of Pressure Ulcers
     Objectives:

  • Define the key etiology factors in pressure  ulcer formation
  • Discuss specific interventions for each causative factor
  • Discuss contributing factors to pressure ulcer formation

3.  Wound Assessment
     Objectives:

  • Discuss classification systems for pressure ulcers, venous,  arterial and diabetic wounds
  • List at least five items to be assessed and documented when evaluating an existing wound (acute & chronic)

4.  Operating Room Acquired Pressure Ulcers
     Objectives:

  • Discuss the etiology of pressure ulcers - pressure, shear, friction, moisture &  heat
  • List the positions used in surgical procedures and sites at risk for pressure ulcer development
  • Describe interventions to prevent, limit tissue destruction &/or treat operating room acquired pressure ulcers.

(Accredited for 1.0 Contact Hour (ANCC) and CA, 1 CEU for CMCN renewal requirements by the ABMCN, 1.0 Clock Hour (CCMC) and/or 0.1 CEU (TPTA) ).

5.  AHRQ (AHCPR): Treatment of Pressure Ulcers 
     Objectives:

  • List four debridement methods
  • Discuss the wound cleaning and infection control procedures recommended by the AHRQ treatment guidelines
  • List and discuss the four criteria for choosing a pressure ulcer dressing
  • List adjunctive therapies and operative repair for pressure ulcers

6.  Wound Healing Process 
     Objectives:
  • Describe the physiologic events involved in the wound healing process
  • Discuss the impact selected factors will have on wound healing
  • List new trends in wound healing therapies
