Effectively Implement Kinetic Therapy™ in Your Facility
Patients with pulmonary complications are among the most serious and costly in hospitals today. How can you provide the best patient care and control your costs in the ICU? The Kinetic Therapy™ Outcomes Program (KTOPsm) is a complete program of therapies, research, protocols and tracking mechanisms designed to help your facility control the high costs of pulmonary complications. Clinical studies have demonstrated that Kinetic Therapy can help:
- Reduce the ICU length of stay by 24%1
- Reduce the overall hospital length of stay by 24.5 days2
- Reduce intubation time by up to 42%2
- Reduce the incidence of ICU-acquired pneumonia by 50%1
- Reduce the incidence of lower respiratory tract infections by 32%2
By lowering the costs associated with pulmonary complications, you can help directly contribute to the profitability of your institution. KCI has developed a four-step process to help your facility implement Kinetic Therapy™ protocols to track clinical outcomes and assess cost-savings opportunities.
Step 1: Assessment
Compare your hospital data to national benchmarks
Your first need to complete an assessment of how your facility’s current practice patterns compare to national benchmarks
From multidisciplinary team
After assessment, it is vital to form a multidisciplinary team to include trauma, respiratory care, infection control, a KCI representative and critical care disciplines.
Review literature
As a team you will need to review literature on Kinetic Therapy™ and other pulmonary therapeutic treatment options that can help you improve patient care and lower your costs.
Step 2: Developing A Plan
Review available products
Become familiar with KCI’s pulmonary therapies and treatment options. Once you have decided on a product or products, you will need to evaluate if it fits into your ICU.
Develop prevention and treatment protocols
Based on the therapies you select, you will need to develop Kinetic Therapy™ prevention and treatment protocols. KCI can recommend guidelines for the use of Kinetic Therapy™.
Educate team
A key part of the Planning Step is Education. KCI can help educate your ICU staff through our ANCC-Accredited Educational Programs.
Step 3: Implementation Of the Plan
Patient assessment
Assess the patient according to the Kinetic Therapy™ prevention and treatment protocols.
Institute Kinetic Therapy™ protocols.
Institute the protocols for prevention and treatment that you established in Step 2.
Data collection
Establish which data to collect on each patient and develop a process for collecting this data. Examples of items to track are:
- PaO2
- FiO2
- PEEP
- Tidal volume
- Peak Inspiratory Pressure (PIP)
- Chest X-ray
Step 4: Reassessment Of Outcomes
Adherence to Protocols
Evaluate your adherence to the protocols. Investigate those areas in which you are not getting compliance. Once you discover why, make improvements in your protocol based on increased experience and improved care.
Re-establish baseline
Re-establish the baseline by evaluating new technologies and innovative prevention and treatment options as they become available. When appropriate, establish a new baseline for measuring continuous quality improvement as a result of new therapies.
Clinical and financial review
Evaluate both the clinical and financial data based on Kinetic Therapy™ and present this information to the team.
