- Employees of the facility collect the patient data.
- The “at risk” population (for this study) is the Adult Medical, Surgical and Critical Care patients. (For more information see Definitions.)
- Patients are assessed in two clinical observations, one on Prevalence day and one on Incidence Day (each within 24 hours).
- The average length of stay of the units is used to determine the length of time between the two observations. (For more information see Definitions.)
- Prevalence Study day consists of assessing the patients in the adult medical, surgical and critical care units in the facility. Facilities need to complete data collection forms only for patients with pressure ulcers.
- Incidence Study Day consists of assessing the patients in the adult medical, surgical and critical care units who were intact on prevalence day but have since developed a pressure ulcer. Data collection forms will only be completed for patients with pressure ulcers.
- Data collection forms are completed for patients and sent to KCI for processing.
- Reports are sent back to the facility for analysis.
- Pressure Ulcers will not be measured during the study.
- Patients with pressure ulcers on Prevalence day will not be assessed on Incidence day for pressure ulcers that have gotten better or worse during the study time or for new pressure ulcer development.
